How to Access
Housing Assistance
HomeShare Vermont

Homesharing is a simple idea where two or more people share a home for mutual benefit. A person offers a private bedroom and shared common space in exchange for rent, help around the home or a combination of the two. HomeShare Vermont is based in Burlington Vermont and has decades of experience in facilitating safe and lasting home shares. They’ve expanded to offer this programming incrementally across the state by partnering with local organizations. In 2025, Windham & Windsor Housing Trust launched our partnership with HomeShare and have one of our Homeownership Specialists trained to assist in finding successful matches in our region!

Housing Assistance
Shared Equity Homeownership Program

The Shared Equity Program helps people buy homes by offering down payment assistance grants of up to 35% of the market price to buyers who meet income requirements. This grant remains with the home, benefiting future eligible buyers when the home is sold. In return, the original buyer agrees to limit the profit they make from the home’s appreciation.

VHIP (Rental Rehab)

VHIP 2 is primarily a reimbursement program that works with private property owners to create or rehab rental housing stock across Vermont through forgivable loans of either five or ten-year terms. These homes, including accessory dwelling units (ADUs) and multifamily rentals will be leased at an affordable rate for at least 5-10 years depending on the funding structure. Windham & Windsor housing Trust administers this program in Windham and Windsor Counties. Applications currently on pause.

Green Mountain Home Repair Program

The Green Mountain Home Repair (GMHR) program helps homeowners address critical health and safety issues as well increase the energy efficiency of their homes. Through low cost loans, flexible terms and support with identifying a contractor and project oversight, Green Mountain Home Repair may be just the help you need. This program also assists landlords with necessary repairs in 2-4 unit rental buildings. For a limited time, we are offering a $2,500 grant to qualified applicants to help offset the cost of the loan.
